I'm s little worked up, folks. I was just listening to Fox News — You know, the right-wing network that doesn't have any liberals on it, except for Juan Williams, Alan Colmes, Kirsten Powers, Dennis Kucinich, Shepard Smith, Geraldo Rivera, Mara Liasson, Bill Schulz, Susan Estrich, Santita Jackson, Simon Rosenber, Howard Kurtz, Meghan McCain, and Bob Beckel, till he got himself fired, and a few dozen more.
Well, two talking heads — one was Bill Hemmer, and I don't know who the second was — were discussing Trump's speech today, in which he said:
The killer, whose name I will not use, or ever say, was born an Afghan, of Afghan parents, who immigrated to the United States.
Now, everybody in the known Universe knew exactly what Trump meant, the minute he said it. I knew it, the "journalists" knew it, and they knew that Trump knew it! Trump wasn't saying Mateen was born in Afghanistan, he was saying that he was born an Afghan because his parents were Afghan, which, I'm pretty sure, reflects Afghani law as well as being a simple ethnic fact. Many countries have laws stating that if a married couple that consists of two of their citizens have a child while abroad, the child is also a citizen, legally. We have such a law. Do I have to do yet another version of the kittens born in the oven quibcag? I do? Okay, here it is:
Anyhow, since Trump said:
was born an Afghan, of Afghan parents, who immigrated to the United States.
That certainly suggests that Mateen was born here after they immigrated. If only he had said "had immigrated." But wait. We're dealing with Donald Trump here. He may very well have left the "had" out precisely to bait all the talking heads into talking about how ignorant he is to not know that Mateen was born here.
First, he can point out what I just did, that what he said simply means he was born an Afghan, which he was. He wasn't born a Navajo or a Nepali. His ethnicity is clear as a bell, expecially considering that he murdered 49 homosexuals. Some of us in the West have contempt or even hostility towards homosexuals, but we don't believe we should kill them, nor do we have a religion that tells us we should. Afghans do. Anyhow, this will give Trump the opportunity to 1. demonstrate that the talking heads can't understand a simple statemant, and 2. They take every opportunity to deliberately misinterpret what Trump says, because they're all working for Hillary. He can give them 24 hous to blather away on the subject and then, POW!
Second, this gives Trump an opportunity to publicly distinguish immigrants who want to become Americans in every way from phony immigrants who want nothing of the kind, but who intend to despise their host country and milk it for all the freebies it offers. Such people are better labelled "invaders" than "immigrants." Trump could give a doozy of a speech about that, and point to his own wife as an example of the first.
Another terrible blunder by Trump that will turn out to have been a ruse de guerre.
