CHURCHILL ON ISLAM
"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property - either as a child, a wife, or a concubine - must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.
"Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen: all know how to die. But the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytising faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science - the science against which it had vainly struggled - the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome."
-- Winston Churchill
I checked with Snopes, just to be sure, and they've confirmed it as an authentic Churchill quote. Snopes quotes it, and adds:
The above-quoted passage did appear in The River War when it was first published as a two-volume set in 1899, but the selection was removed when the book was condensed into one volume and republished in 1902. While the one-volume abridged edition of The River War is still readily available, as of January 2015 the original two-volume 1899 version is much harder to find, a condition which may have led to confusion about the origins of the quote in question. However, the Churchill Centre has confirmed these words were indeed written by Winston Churchill.
So. From what I know of Islam, at first hand and from what I read, what Churchill says has the definite ring of truth about it. Islam has, of course, produced some very admirable people, especially warriors. And we in the West have always been well aware of it, hence this cartoon:
But, as I've said elsewhere before, Islam seems to be a version of Christianity rewritten and adapted to fit the culture of Arabia at the time. To a large extent, it seems to have actually ameliorated some of the worst parts of that culture, but, unfortunately, it affirmed and made permanent some of the bad parts as well. At least by Western standards.
All of this has led me to conclude that the proper attitude of the West towards Islam should be:
1. Friendship and cordial relations with Islamic countries, because despite all that I (and Churchill) have said above, we have a lot of good things in common with them.
2. Mutual agreement with the Islamic world to avoid attempts to spread cultural elements inimical to one from the other. This goes both ways. If an Islamic country wants to prohibit Christian proselytization, we should honor their decision. And the same goes for the reverse.
3. Immigration of Muslims to the West, or Christians into the Islamic world can and should be prohibited for the good of both culures.
I don't see how anybody other than the most irresponsible SJW could object to these conclusions.
For some reason, known only to my subconscious, I decided to illustrate this with the Burka Avenger [link].
