A Policeman's Lot

In the aftermath of Ferguson, it's useful to sit back and think about just how much nonsense has been spouted about police and police work. There has been testimony for ivory-tower knuckleheads and film stars about just how much force the cop should have used, and how much force a cop always should use. There's even a quote from Sheriff Andy Taylor making its way around the net. All the nonsense about how many shots the policeman should have taken, and whether he should have taken any at all, was discredited in THIS POST from last week.

But to really make it clear, we must turn to Fred, who not only knows what he's talking about, but is very clear about expressing it. And he has no patience with armchair criminologists. This is from the Unz Review:

Notes from the Drains - #615
What Cops Really Do
Quibcag: Again I've used the ladies from You're Under Arrest (逮捕しちゃうぞ Taiho Shichauzo), but I hasten to remind you that I pick these illustrations for their eye-catching quality first, their relevance second, and accuracy a distant third. There is a role for policewomen, and there always has been. It is not, however, the same role that men have in most cases. A street cop has to have the ability to dominate and defuse situations by his perceived size and strength and power. Women can't exude this, and policewoman are therefore much less effective, and far more likely to need to use their weapons. Ask any cop if this is not the case.

  1. some random guy sez:
All those things may indeed be true, though I have my doubts as to just how much awfulness a police officer sees. The very worst aspects are talked about just like soldiers do. And just like soldiers you never hear about the boredom. The routine. You might think police officers leave the house every day going to downtown Baghdad but the crime statistics wouldn't support that.

But the real point is this: if you find yourself turning against the very people you took an oath to serve why do the vast majority stay in the job?

A sense of very real power?
    The pension and benefits?
    A bit of hero status?
    Belonging to a gang?
    All of the above?

  2. Pigs get off on the power. Thats it. They need to be put in their place just like anybody else.
