The Liberal Disconnect on Guns

This particular liberal contradiction has been bothering me since the Sixties. On the one hand, the liberals have always been hostile to the rich (yes, I know, but they ignore the liberal rich, which seems to be most of them) and down on the police and the military, constantly complaining about police brutality, yadda yadda yadda, and the government pushing them around. Well and good. It even makes a little sense sometimes.

But then, they advocate at the same time massive gun control, virtually begging the government to disarm them and everybody else but the rich, the police, and the military. And that does not make sense. Currently, with Obama in charge, much of the left has decided that the government is a good thing, so of course we can trust the government to have all the firepower. But, no, they also begged Bush and Reagan and other horrifying right-wing (to them) governments to disarm them.

The authorities and the rich can't be trusted, but the we must trust the authorities and the rich to have all the guns. You explain it. I can't.
Matt Bailey wrote in with a good explanation:

By the "authorities" they mean Mom, Dad, your Boss, and the preacher. By "rich" they mean upper-middle class. They don't mean the Fed which they worship and international gabillionaires, which a lot o them are.

  1. Best think of them as useful idiots. They don't connect the dots as to the consequences of what they advocate. They just know it makes them feel good/superior/etc. Somewhere up the food chain of those funding/supporting gun control you eventually reach people who know what they are doing.

  2. I think the problem here is that Intelligence engenders cooperation while stupidity always seems to be a competition.
