Wanting to be Americans

Cartoon by BALOO.  Click to enlarge.
We keep hearing the same refrain.  Illegal aliens just want to make a better life for themselves. Well, of course.  Just about anything anybody ever does is about making a better life for themselves.  Tautology and therefore meaningless.  But even better than that is the saying that illegal aliens "want to be Americans," which is calculated to call up visions of the Sons of Liberty and the Adams boys and Davy Crockett and Sargent York.  Uh-uh.  Now, when you're talking about masses of humanity, like "Americans" or "illegal aliens" or "Presbyterians," it's almost certain that any generalization you can think of will be true of some of them, so anecdotes about one or another illegal alien who really does want to be an American in the best sense of the word don't prove anything.  A much more accurate generalization is that illegals want the benefits of being in America, whatever they might think they are.  All too often, it's the freebies.  And our gentle handling of criminals.  And more freebies.  You might just as well say that rats who raid granaries "want to be farmers."

As I keep saying, it's not just the liberals and neocons who perpetuate this myth about illegals and their good intentions.  It's all too many libertarians, too.  One of the more idiotic denial-of-reality branches of libertarianism is the Objectivist group (our friend Baloo likes to call them 'Obnoxiousists'), who are right up front in the open-borders bandwagon (except for Israel, of course. Always except for Israel).

One of them, Harry Binswanger, has just advocated not only that we welcome illegals, but that we also... Well, I'll let John Rocker tell you. This from World Net Daily:

WE OWE ILLEGALS AN APOLOGY?
Exclusive: John Rocker hits amnesty Republicans for 'surrendering to colonization'

You ever read something so stupid, you weren’t immediately sure if it was supposed to be hyperbole? Harry Binswanger, an acolyte of Ayn Rand and Objectivism, just published what amounts to the most asinine column in the history of columns – published at Forbes.com, it’s titled, “Amnesty For Illegal Immigrants Is Not Enough, They Deserve An Apology.”

Atlas didn’t shrug because of the growth of the state; Atlas shrugged because of this piece by Binswanger, hoping to shake individuals such as him off his back. It is these open-border fanatics who advocate the same policies that turned the once golden state of California into the actual manifestation of their ideas.

And yet, Binswanger is still delusional enough to believe that illegal aliens are the answer to creating Rand’s fabled “Galt’s Gulch.”

Take this line from his Forbes.com piece:

“The illegals came here because they value America. They broke an unjust law in order to live a free, better, richer life. In the vast majority of cases, obeying anti-immigration laws would mean never getting to live here. It’s a life sentence.”

Illegal aliens don’t value America – they value the type of conditions Americans have created in America, which, absent of actual Americans, don’t exist.

  1. Speaking as someone who has lived in an area where there are thousands of illegal aliens all the time I know some feel that this was the only way to come to America to enjoy American freedom, some want American money earned more or less honestly, and some are criminals come to America to steal and commit other blatant crimes and get out before they get caught. The Border (any Border) is crazy. Cross between Casa Blanca and Robert Asprin's Sanctuary. And We're steal sager than most of the rest of the country, what the frig are they doing wrong up North and East?

  2. Ayn Rand was a nut and so are all of her followers. Anyone who wants open borders is a leftist who hates this country and wants to see it destroyed.

  4. Illegal immigrants don't pay taxes, because technically they don't exist. I understand that the immigration system needs an overhaul as it has many, many flaws. And allowing the flow of people across the border unabated is foolish. But by granting amnesty to those illegals already here, doesn't that increase tax revenue we would receive from them? (which is currently $0) As well if they are granted legal status, they have motivation to stay in the US and spend the money they earn, rather than trucking it back home to be spent not on the American economy? Are these benefits not sufficient to offset the negatives if we first fix the problems that need fixing?
