One thing a leader is not, is the fellow who runs to the front of a movement and pretends he's leading it. A leader changes the course of events. The Founding Fathers included a lot of leaders in that sense. Most any of them could have joined the other side and done just fine in their lives, but they didn't like the accepted path, and wanted to create a new one.
It's hard for any of us to be objective, because we hate to think of those we despise as leaders, though they might be very good leaders, indeed. FDR was, for example. As was Lincoln. And we tend to think of those we agree with as leaders, though they might not be very good leaders at all. Ron Paul is a great man and a great statesman, but is he a great leader?
Well, Charles Coulombe asks where all the great leaders have gone, and attempts and answer and an explanation HERE.
Speaking of leadership, one last point: I ask again, is it too late to run Putin as a write-in candidate here? Wouldn't you love to have a President who talked to reporters like this? Thanks to Kylie over at http://isteve.blogspot.com/ for the link.

As much as I think of Ron Paul I have to admit that he isn't much of a leader, although he did develop quite a following. Too late, I'm afraid.
ReplyDeleteLincoln was no leader at all. He wasn't even a Kennedy or a W. People with character who met him detested him. His election victories were back room deals.
FDR was a leader among the moneyed class. He bought his way to the top. Mass media was a new and enchanting thing at the time.
Your hero Cal wasn't a leader, but he was a pretty decent man.
Theodore Roosevelt might be a closer example of a leader among US presidents, although I believe much of it was a charade.
Even Reagan was only considered a leader once he began to be considered for the presidency. A B-actor.
James Polk is the likeliest to qualify, after George Washington.
Come to think of it, we have had very few leaders. Democracy and Republicanism seem to guarantee that.
Yeah, the more I think about it the more I'd like to go down the time tunnel and help defeat those arrogant colonists.
You can't have leadership without responsibility. You can't have responsibility in democracy, or as we now now, with republican government. Only a monarch is responsible for the state of his country.
God bless George III.
