Dancing with Wolf Cults

I'm not an "isolationist." I think the US, like any country, should maintain an intelligence service and keep ourselves informed about what's going on everywhere, just in case.  But keeping informed isn't at all the same as getting involved, which is frequently a very bad, self-defeating idea. When we did get involved in the Cold War, we did a lot of things that can be debated on the merits, but at least we did have an actual, powerful adversary in the USSR, and it made sense to counter its reaches for power. But of course there was a downside to that.  We financed the Mujahideen in Afghanistan, for example, when the Soviets occupied the place, and that had the effect of helping to drive them out, and could be said to be instrumental in the ultimate fall of the USSR.  But the downside was the strengthening of the Mujahideen, which fought us and is still fighting us now that we've invaded Afghanistan. Indeed, you could say that the history of our involvement in the Middle East consists of our aiding and strengthening  "allies" who ultimately became our sworn enemies. I can't think of an exception to that, can you?

Our skirted Machiavelli, Hillary, is working on a new arrangement with an "Ally," this time the Mujahedin-e-Khalq (MEK), another bunch of freedom fighters who are no doubt on the point of joining the PTA and declaring their support of any and all Democratic American Values and posing for Norman Rockwell pictures.  Or maybe not.  You can read the history of this jolly band HERE.
