John Derbyshire's "The Talk"

National Review has just fired John Derbyshire for writing the piece below.  Editor Rich Lowry had this to say:

Anyone who has read Derb in our pages knows he’s a deeply literate, funny, and incisive writer. I direct anyone who doubts his talents to his delightful first novel, “Seeing Calvin Coolidge in a Dream,” or any one of his “Straggler” columns in the books section of NR. Derb is also maddening, outrageous, cranky, and provocative. His latest provocation, in a webzine, lurches from the politically incorrect to the nasty and indefensible. We never would have published it, but the main reason that people noticed it is that it is by a National Review writer. Derb is effectively using our name to get more oxygen for views with which we’d never associate ourselves otherwise. So there has to be a parting of the ways. Derb has long danced around the line on these issues, but this column is so outlandish it constitutes a kind of letter of resignation. It’s a free country, and Derb can write whatever he wants, wherever he wants. Just not in the pages of NR or NRO, or as someone associated with NR any longer.

As a public service, I'm reproducing this here.  Takimag.com has been unavailable, on and off, all morning, and this is Derbyshire's notorious post that is causing the furore described HERE.  I searched the net to see if Derbyshire had it up somewhere else without success, so I'm taking the liberty of putting it here temporarily. I'll take this post down when Takimag is stable again. — Ex-Army

Update:  The original is available now at

so I'm removing this for now.  I'll keep it in an archive, though, in case it disappears again.  Do let me know if you can't get to it.

  3. Sounds like common sense to me. Hard to believe MSM is so upset.

  4. I'd read Derb's piece before the brouhaha. Didn't seem so unusual to me and of course made perfect common sense. Thanks for republishing.

  5. Here is a comment I left on the Derbyshire article:

The ones crying "foul" the loudest are the same groups that set the conditions that this article is talking about, to happen.

The groups I'm talking about is the ragtag coalitions of the left.

Teaching young children the black anger/white guilt paradigm rather than competent reading, writing, arithmetic, and the golden rule.

Teaching young children collective guilt and unappeaseable anger is mass psychological child abuse by the left.

The left is a plague upon humanity.

  6. They're probably so mad because he's shining a light on what most adults do without even thinking about it. Too, he advocates self-preservation above sensitivity. The horror!

In real life of course, these same "outraged" folks avoid blacks like the plague. If only they had the honesty and bravery to explain why they do so to their kids.

  7. Taki crashed for days [due to 1000s going there?]. Derbys article has 4000+ [give or take a few] comments there.
I will share some and my comments:

Why don't you just let your children figure out these things by themselves? Your views are outdated and may not even apply to the areas where your children hang out. As a kid growing up in a big city, no-one told me to watch out for Black people. I was smart enough to be careful when approaching a group of kids in gang attire - didn't need anybody give me some kind of pseudo-scientific lecture about the Bell curve.
I wouldn't go to crime-infested projects - neither did my Black friends at high school. If I saw a group of Skinheads, of which there were plenty in the 80s, I would cross the street - they were in fact much more likely to attack me. Again, these reactions come naturally when you are in the city.
From what I can see you are just a fearful man. A little man I would say. Be strong my brother! The real world ain't as scary as you

Trolls of the blogosphere unite! Do any of you seriously believe that traditional conservatives see this outpouring of never-heard-of-before commenters as a serious reflection of the public mind? You've been good, servile little trolls but as herd creatures, it's time for you to listen for the next instruction from your intellectual superiors.
Derb will still be here and elsewhere, contributing long after you have found and "expressed yourselves" at other targets.

In the UK, Derb would have lost his kids if underage and likely be under arrest.

Ex army..what about doing a piece on Duke Us 'gang of 88'?
